CPB Post

Despite all the research about the effectiveness of video as an instructional tool, why do you think video use is still not very prevalent in today's schools? Should there be more video? Why or why not?

I think that video is not used because teachers and administrators are still stuck in the old way of thinking that videos are just space fillers. I think that many don't know about the research that shows the effectiveness of video. I think that there should be more video in the classrooms as long as teachers use them effectively rather than just time fillers. Using video effectively is a great way to use technology in the classroom. I feel that it is always beneficial to give information to students through a variety of ways. In my subject of history, I always hear people complaining about history being boring and that all they do is read. By using videos to aid in the teaching of a certain time period, history is brought to life and I think that it is easier to understand. After reading the statistic that we only remember 10% of what we read and 20% of what we hear, I was amazed that reading and lecturing is still the norm in teaching. When I become a teacher I know that I don't want to waste my time doing things that aren't helping the students learn and remember, so I definitely will use videos when I teach.

Reiser Post

I like the idea of the TEAMS project. I think that it is very beneficial for students to see how concepts can relate across subjects. By learning things that relate at the same time it is easier for some to learn new concepts.

The examples of the integrated final projects and the methods in the article related a lot. They both are trying to connect overarching themes to many different subjects. I found that some of the examples of the final projects were hard to understand and follow. The ones that I thought were easy to understand were the ones that attached a copy of the table, showing all the different stations and subjects, and it was also helpful if they explained a little before jumping right into the activities.

In order to teach like this, I think that it would take a lot of teacher cooperation. Teachers of different subjects would have to be willing to put for the time and effort to be apart of this project. I think that you would also need to have technology resources available to you. It would work best if the resources were accessible in the classroom instead of having to go to a lab.

I think that the TEAMS project is worthwhile. I can see some problems if it was the only way to teach subjects because sometimes a lesson just needs to be taught independent of other things especially when you are trying to fit in the entire core curriculum. I think that if this process was used for somethings that students might get more engaged in their learning and would be able to understand concepts better.
